A fire incident at the Guest House of the University of Lagos in the early hours of Thursday killed the brother of the Shehu of Borno State and former Auditor General of the state, Mallam Abbah Kyari.
The fire razed part of the guest house killing Kyari, who was in the institution for its convocation ceremony.
The late Kyari was, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), part of the delegation of Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, who was recently made the Chancellor of UNILAG.
The Emir was to be installed at the event.
NEMA claimed he died of suffocation.
His body has been flown to Borno State where he is expected to be buried according to Islamic rites.
The zonal spokesperson of NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, announced that "there was a fire outbreak involving members of delegation of Shehu of Borno at UNILAG.
"The incident happened at the Shehu of Borno Guest House in UNILAG and one person died of suffocation.
"The deceased was a brother to Shehu of Borno, Umar Abubakar Garbai. The guest house A12 was involved.
"The deceased will be flown to Maiduguri for burial today. There are four guest rooms affected altogether – A12, A13, A14 and A15."
