The Ogun State Police Command has arrested six suspects and rescued two pregnant women and four children during an operation targeting an alleged baby factory in the Mowe area of Obafemi Owode Local Government Area.
The operation, carried out on Monday, August 24, followed intelligence gathered by police operatives regarding suspected human trafficking and illegal adoption activities at a facility in Abaren Village.
According to the command, officers stormed the suspected hideout on Toluwalase Street, Abaren Village, via Gbarinmole, at about 8:00 a.m. during the intelligence-led operation.
The raid resulted in the rescue of two heavily pregnant women and four children, comprising two boys and two girls. Police said preliminary investigations indicated that trafficking and illegal adoption had allegedly been taking place at the location for some time.
The investigation subsequently led officers to a hospital within the Mowe area, where another woman had reportedly delivered a baby boy on August 20.
Police said the newborn could not be accounted for while the mother was undergoing medical treatment. The development reportedly prompted the arrest of an attending nurse as efforts intensified to locate the missing infant.
The command said the six arrested suspects and the related case are being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
Authorities said investigators would work to determine the full scope of the alleged operation, locate the missing newborn and identify all individuals involved so that anyone found culpable can face prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, Bode Ojajuni, reaffirmed the command's commitment to combating human trafficking, child trading and other forms of violent crime across the state.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and provide the police with credible information that could help prevent trafficking and protect vulnerable children and other victims.
The police command said it would continue to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
